About Us
All
About Moms was created in September of 2000 as an
E-mail discussion group to bring experienced moms
together with first time moms-to-be to evoke
advice, support and friendship in an intimate
setting. The web site followed in October 2000
and continues to grow and prosper under the
careful guidance of it's creator and founder,
Loree Siermachesky.
Who I am...
If
you had asked me in January of 2000 that a year
and a half later, I'd be participating and
running an expansive web site about
preconception, pregnancy and parenting, I would
have scoffed. As a mother of three lively boys,
aged 3 to 9, I certainly didn't have time for the
Internet. But, as a Christmas present from my
husband, I was given my first chance to go
"online". In February 2000, I
discovered I was pregnant with baby #4 and
decided to try out this new and exciting tool as
a means of connecting with other women in this
game of motherhood. When I miscarried in March of
2000, I felt deserted by the group of friends I
had met on several pregnancy message baords,
afterall, they were still pregnant and didn't
want to deal with my sorrow. But as a mother of
three children, I knew had a lot to offer in
helping new moms-to-be. In September 2000 I
completed most of my training for becoming a
doula and decided to test my theory of bringing
experienced moms together with first time moms
for support, advice and friendship. I had found
from my past experience, mothers were
"segregated" into groups by message
boards and had very little contact with the
entire community. The All About Moms E-mail
discussion group was formed, a gathering to start
of 25 moms, some moms-to-be, and some experienced
in the realm of motherhood already. What happened
next amazed me. The discussion group has welcomed
over 27 babies since its inception, grown
considerably in size and each group has at
minimum one professional (midwife or doula) that
actively participates in all discussions. That's
something I can say that any other online
preconception and pregnancy community doesn't
have. Our experts, Sarah H. Day, CNM, IBCLC;
Angela Kerevarah, CNM, RN; Dr. Michael Braune,
M.D., OB/GYN, Dr. Henry Whitmore, CCFP and myself
will answer any question that is asked of us to
the best of our knowledge. We are unpaid
professionals willing to give you our time for
your peace of mind.
The
All About Moms web site was created shortly after
the E-mail discussion group was formed, simply
because it was asked of me. My background
includes a graphic art degree but with no prior
knowledge of the Internet, I certainly didn't
know how to build a website, let alone run one.
With the help of several online friends,
"HTML for Dummies" and sheer
determination to do this, I struck out and built
the web site in October 2000. It has evolved over
the past year as I have gained more experience
and more knowledge. It's far from perfect but
coming from someone who did not know what instant
messaging was 18 months ago, I think I've done
pretty good. The web site continues to be updated
and operated by myself, although there are many
people who deserve recognition for their support
and help. Doug Williams of Frayed Designs who has come through for
me with my more "creative" cool tools.
Ask and he will build! Dawn Hough, a mother of
two, who leads and moderates my discussion groups
with passion and exuberance. Shelia Vermeulen, a
first time mom, my very first mentee, who has
quietly supported, encouraged and cheered me on
throughout the group's inception. Without it, I
certainly would have closed my doors. And to all
my mommy mentors and mentees, you make this site
and it's companion Empty Cradles a quiet success.
